San Diego’s Wild Animal Park’s Africa Tour is one of Southland Paving’s exclusive projects – and one we’re very proud of.
Recently, we were contracted with the Zoological Society of San Diego to construct a new guided tour roadway around the perimeter of the Wild Animal Park (Africa Tour) that would allow park members and visitors the opportunity to have a close look at wild animals and endangered species.
This nine-month project was quite a unique experience for our team in that our crews worked in extremely close proximity to the animals in a setting that mirrors their natural habitat. This required taking all necessary precautions to ensure minimal disturbance to the animals.
The scope of work included demolition of the existing monorail tour and the construction of a new roadway for future computer-guided tours that utilized non-ferrous materials. The project also contained a rather large, distinctive bridge with drainage structures, sewer, water and storm drain systems, and lavish landscaping.
This project represents one in which we were able to successfully meet a number of unique challenges. As a result, we wanted to share some of its specifics, as well as a slide show illustrating the job in more detail.
